Choosing the colors to paint your home can be a tricky business. It’s not very easy to combine different colors that can look good and transmit the sense of calmness and tranquility you want in your personal space.
The easiest solution is to hire the services of an experienced designer that can help you decide.
But knowing a little bit more about color, and educating yourself about it can be really helpful to get a better idea of what you want.
This is why we want to teach you a little bit about the Color rules and how different colors can complement each other.
The whole theory is based on the color wheel:
As you can see, the colors slightly transform as you move from one point to another on the wheel.
We will be discussing four main color rules that will help you a lot when deciding about your paint colors.
This one works very good for combining colors for a home because it’s color combination has low contrast. If you take a look at the color wheel, you’ll realize colors on the oposite site of the wheel generate high contrast. The point of using analogous colors, is to pick a base color and combine it with color next to the one you chose in the wheel. This way you can create a nice combination, with colors that have similar hue:
As you can see, the color picked is a dark yellow. The other analogous colors that result are a lighter yellow (still not very light), and a brown. These are the two colors next to the main color we picked. If you want to pick 5 colors, in that case you’ll have: the one you picked, the two next to it, and the other two next to those.
This is a good way of choosing colors for your house because you don’t want high contrast between colors. It will produce a hard combination that will not help you feel relaxed, as you should feel home.
This is another good technique for your home painting: pick monochromatic colors. This consists in picking a base color again. Then, the other colors should be on the same hue as the base color. So, for example if you pick yellow, you can choose other shades of yellow.
As you can see in the color wheel, yellow combines well with brown and other darker and lighter yellows.
This color combination can also produce very nice combinations, but it is riskier. Specially for your home paint. This is because it comes up with colors with high contrast. It’s very used in print and web design, since it can help to draw your attention to specific things. Be careful if you use it for your place, since high contrast can create stress and discomfort visually.
In this color wheel example, you can see the triad colors in action. Dark yellow, purple and light blue are far from each other in the color wheel.
Complementary colors are the direct oposite in the color wheel. Unlike the triad, it consists mainly in two colors. They too generate a high contrast and serve the same purpose as the triad.
We hope this basic color theory helps you understand a little bit better the way color combination works. The colors you chose for your home are really important.
We recommend you use this adobe tool that comes in really handy when choosing color combinations.
